The influences are the Cambridge Science Festival and also the National Science and Engineering Week. Spring into STEM

STEM Team East, with the support of the University of Bedfordshire, are organising ‘Spring into STEM’, a networking event for Teachers and STEM Ambassadors. This is a great opportunity to find out about the British Science Association CREST Awards and how STEM Ambassadors and Teachers can work together to engage pupils in STEM.

Designing the Vehicles of the Future

EmKay Plastics Ltd, based near Norwich very kindly provided us with offcuts of their Rohacell Foam for our Wind Tunnel Activity at The Engineering Festival. Students were given the opportunity to design a model vehicle from the foam, attach it to a chassis in the wind tunnel and calculate the drag coefficient. Pupils designed some wonderful vehicle shapes, from the conventional smoothed truck body and streamlined arrow shapes, even one with a strong resemblance to a fish – an example of biomimicry perhaps?

Our most recent Directory for STEM Ambassadors in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Lots more schools have requested Ambassadors come into schools to talk about their careers, to support STEM Clubs and act as mentors for British Science Association CREST Awards. Please have a look for schools closest to where you live or work. We’d also like to draw your attention to our activities at The Perse Prep and at St. Mary’s School in January. If you would like to support these activities please let us know as soon as possible.

Nuffield and Gold CREST Celebration 2011

On 8^th November STEM Team East celebrated the success of forty three A level students from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex for their achievement as Nuffield Research Bursary students and British Science Association Gold CREST award winners. The students worked for 3-4 weeks during the summer alongside scientists, mathematicians and engineers on research projects and produced work of outstanding quality.

The celebration event was hosted by The Marshall Group giving the students an opportunity to showcase their research projects in the highly successful engineering company – Elizabeth Crilly of STEM Team East believes opportunities such as this raise student aspiration and help ambition become reality.

Sir Michael Marshall was delighted to host this event at which so many young people very clearly demonstrated their enormous talent. Marshall is enormously proud of its very strong commitment to training and encouraging young people over a period of 102 years and we are particularly pleased to be able to support STEM Team East and the Nuffield Research Bursary Scheme.-Mr Terry Holloway – Group Support Executive

The companies and research institutions involved were: University of Cambridge, Anglian Ruskin University, STRobotics, MRC, Babraham Institute , Babraham Biosciences Technologies Ltd; RCTreatts: Omega Ingredients; Marshall Aerospace; Lingumatics; Imperial College London; Kings College, London; Sentec Ltd, Active Technologies ; Genzyme Ltd; University of Essex.

Students were from Thomas Deacon Academy, The Netherhall School, The Perse School, Stephen Perse Foundation, Hills Road Sixth Form College, Abbey College, St Ivo School, Saffron Walden County High School, Chelmsford County High School for Girls, King Edward VI Grammar School, Northgate High School, Bury St. Edmunds County Upper School, Suffolk One, Bancroft’s School and Coopers Company and Coburn School.
